My paintings are a celebration of life, of beauty. They speak of living in the moment, which, it seems to me, is the essence of enjoying life.

With the pressures in today’s world, it is so easy to slip into a daze, go through the motions of a daily routine, and no longer notice the beauty that surrounds us. My challenge, with each of my paintings, is to break through that barrier, capture a moment in time, then entice the viewer to pause and reflect on it.

My work is strongly influenced by the great California and Russian impressionists. Their vision strikes a deep, resonant chord within my soul. For inspiration I love to seek out subjects as timeless as the golden hills of California, the dachas of Russia, the vineyards of Tuscany, the villages of Provence. But I am also drawn to the familiar objects and scenes we encounter everyday. My goal is to translate the essence of these images and places into paintings. As I work, I abstract and personalize my perceptions.

I work primarily in oils, both en plein air and in my studio. I love paint – thick paint. I feel I can almost sculpt it. Painting feels like music and sounds like poetry. It is lyrical. It flows. In my colors, I strive for harmony. As my brush or palette knife dances across the canvas, I sense the rhythm, and I leave traces of it behind in the form of lively and energetic brush strokes. This process of seeing, thinking about and working on paintings consumes all my waking hours. It’s a passion that has taken over my life.
